Michael A. Halpin

Michael Angelo Halpin, 69, was ushered into heaven on March 13, 2024, in Sugar Land, TX, after a long and difficult battle with Frontotemporal Dementia (BvFTD). A beloved husband, father and grandfather, Michael is best known for his deep love for his family. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Grace and John Halpin; father-in-law, Frederick Wurzbacher; and sister-in-law, Diana Halpin. Michael was born November 30, 1954, in Cincinnati, Ohio. He married his highschool sweetheart and the love of his life, Kathleen Marie Wurzbacher, and they enjoyed 46 wonderful years together.

Michael graduated from Purcell High School in Cincinnati. He earned his Economics degree at the University of Cincinnati, a Masters in Management and Finance from St. Xavier University in Cincinnati, and completed the Food Industry Management Program at the University of California. He proudly served 12 years as a store manager for Kroger and earned multiple awards as a store manager during his 28-year career at Wal-Mart. Michael’s dedication and skill led to increasingly challenging opportunities that would take him and his family from his hometown of Cincinnati, Ohio to Houston, Texas, with stints in Monticello, Arkansas and Spring, Sealy, and Nacogdoches, Texas.

Enthusiastic and outgoing, Michael constantly made friends of complete strangers, always striking up conversations and bringing smiles to everyone he met. He was a community leader known for helping his coworkers and selflessly devoting time and energy to many individuals and organizations. Michael focused on building meaningful relationships, everyone seemed to know him and could share a story about his kindness or how wonderful it was to work with him. He prided himself on remembering everybody he ever met, and would run into an old friend almost everywhere he went.

Devoted to his family, Michael thrived on creating lasting memories. Whether it was coaching his children's sports teams, hosting boisterous family dinners, or simply offering a listening ear, his love was evident in every action. He never missed an opportunity to be with his children and grandchildren and was best known for long, tight hugs, lots of laughs and endless amounts of snacks, chocolates and candy. Some of his happiest moments were spent playing and teaching his grandchildren. When he wasn’t busy working or spending time with his family, he was most often found reliving his teenage days as a caddy on the golf course while doing his best to outhit Happy Gilmore.

Michael was dedicated and involved with his local church communities throughout the years as a member of the Knights of Columbus chapters, most recently at St. Laurence Catholic Church in Sugar Land, TX. He was an enthusiastic volunteer for the Houston Food Bank and spent many happy hours helping others.
