Mari Carol Ehrat (nee Tout), a resident of Cincinnati, Ohio, St Louis, Missouri, and Vernon & Patoka, Illinois, passed away on October 3rd , 2025, at the age of 66. Surrounded by her family, Mari ended her courageous journey facing cancer. She faced every challenge with strength, grace, and a fighting spirit that inspired everyone who knew her. Born to Arthur (Bud) Tout and Gertrude C. Tout (nee Scott) on May 5th, 1959, Mari spent her life dedicated to her family, close friends and her beloved pets. She was the loving mother of Stephaine Hoggard (nee Petrocelli) from her marriage to the late John Petrocelli. And she was the loving mother to Kindra EhratCarey and Bryant Ehrat from her marriage to the late Max Ehrat. Though their marriage relationships took different paths, they produced a beautiful family. In addition to her children, Mari is survived by her son-inlaw Cliff Hoggard and his daughter Peyton Hoggard, and her son-in-law Josh Carey, her brother, Jeffrey Tout and his wife Emily Tout, her sister Barbara Rohrmeier (nee Tout) and her husband Mike Rohrmeier, her grandchildren Riley Petrocelli-Krull and Hunter Carey and many close friends. In addition, Mari is survived by many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews, all of whom she loved very much. Mari’s love and compassion for animals started as a youth growing up in Cincinnati, Ohio where she cared for stray kittens and homeless dogs. She often brought home a lost animal and made a new friend. Her first real job was caring for dogs in a local kennel environment with her first husband, John. While living in Illinois, she had a small farm and raised pigs, dogs, cats, and exotic birds. Moving back to Cincinnati did not deter her compassion for animals and she adopted many dogs, cats, exotic birds, tropical fish, lizards and snakes. She loved feeding the wild birds, squirrels and chipmunks in her own backyard. She referred to her home as her own personal family zoo, and she loved it. Later in her life, she enjoyed cooking, often making new recipes she found on the internet, and then sharing (forcing) her family to try her latest culinary creation. To be honest, she was a good cook. She allowed the neighbor’s children to play in her backyard because it was a safe, fenced-in space, and she enjoyed the laughter of children. She was an avid Amazon shopper. Her family never knew what would show up at the doorstep. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, please make a generous donation to one of these organizations. A Celebration of Mari’s Life will be scheduled sometime in late November of 2025.
Mari is gone yet not forgotten, although we are apart from her, her spirit lives within each of us, forever in our hearts. She will be missed.
