Donald "Don" A Carney

Donald A. Carney of Cincinnati, Ohio, passed away peacefully on March 26, 2021 after a 15-month long and courageous battle with cancer. Don was steadfast and strong, exhibiting his classic strength and perseverance until the end. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 58 years, Louise, daughters Pam and Lisa, 3 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, a sister, a “brother”, in-laws and multiple cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his mother and father.

Don would want to be remembered for his love of family. He was extremely proud of his family and their accomplishments, frequently sharing pictures, stories, and news. Don never knew a stranger; he had the gift of gab and an unsurpassed work ethic. Don graduated from Western Hills High School, Class of 1956, and served in the Army Reserves.

Don started working at the young age of 14 to provide for his own horse which fueled a lifelong passion. Later he worked in a grocery store meat department and found a career in meat cutting and managing meat departments. Don was also an entrepreneur. Along with his brother in-law, he started and ran a successful ribbon making business. He was a master of all trades; he could build or repair anything and had a special love for electrical work. Don was an excellent cook and often provided the food for parties and holidays— always carving the Thanksgiving turkey. Family and friends knew they could depend on Don for a sympathetic ear and sage advice. He was a self-taught farrier and horse trainer. He was as comfortable on the back of a horse as he was in his lazy boy recliner. As a lifelong horse owner, he was an avid trail rider and camper.

Don was involved in various Quarter Horse associations, UFCW Local Meat Cutters Union, and the United Church of Christ. The local Gymkhana Club was near and dear to his heart. If there was something to be done at the grounds or with the club, he was there leading and guiding. Don represented the club for many years as a mounted flag bearer in the Harvest Home Parade.

His family and friends will dearly miss him. Don was 82 years old.

I am not truly gone
If you keep me in your heart.
I’ll forever be alive,
And we’ll never have to part.
