Carl H. Heilmann

Carl Henry Heilmann, born December 8, 1933 in Cincinnati Ohio passed away April 13, 2023 at the age of 89. Carl was an all-American boy, but his heart and soul belonged to Germany. His father, Carl Heilmann was from Heidelberg and his mother Hermine Lager was from Ankum. Carl and Hermine emigrated separately from Germany in the 1920’s, and met at the Cincinnati Viking Club on Eastern Avenue. They soon married and had one son, Carl, and one daughter Anne Louise.

Carl attended St. George in Clifton and Roger Bacon High School. For the first part of his life he worked alongside his dad in a number of retail bakeries, the latest being Dainty Maid Bakery on Prouts Corner. He went on to attend the University of Cincinnati and receive a Bachelor of Business. When his dad retired from the bakery business, Carl worked in information systems at the University of Cincinnati and stayed there until he retired. His two sons, David and John, also attended UC for a total of 11 years. They enjoyed many nice lunches together and visits to his office.

Carl met his wife, Edith Duffy, at Proctor Hall at UC where they were caught kissing in the elevator a few times. They married at St. Teresa Church in Price Hill on April 4,1970 and were married 53 years. They had two sons, David (Angela) and John (Lisbeth). David and Angela live on the East side of Cincinnati with their two children Luke and Carly. David followed his dad’s footsteps into a career in information technology. John and Lisbeth live in Milwaukee with their two girls Claire and Anna. John is a professor of communication disorders at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

When Carl was a boy, his best friend was Fred Beinke. Edith and the boys still shutter at hearing the adventures of these two young men riding around the countryside in Fred’s Jeep. One time they even drove down the steep steps of the Viking Club into the Ohio River! While working at UC, Carl met a new best friend Steve West, who he ate Taco Bell with almost every day. They played many rounds of golf together after retirement.

Carl had one sibling, his dear younger sister Anne Louise. Anne Louise married Bruce who also worked at UC. Carl and Anne had one first cousin, George Groh (Donita), and they were more like brothers and sisters sharing most significant life events together.

After retiring from UC, Carl enjoyed golfing with friends and exploring chicken dinners in Indiana. He had monthly lunches with old friends. This included a group of people he worked with at UC, and Air Force Reserve men he served with during the Berlin Crisis in Germany.

The high points of his retirement were spending time with his boys and their families. Carl’s love and support made his sons the men they are today, and his commitment to his wife Edith was unwavering. He was a warm and kind grandfather to his four grandchildren. Simply put, he was just a nice guy. He loved his entire extended family, and friends from UC and Hillbrook Drive. He will be forever in our hearts.
